How do I create plot files in AutoCAD?

These instructions will assist you in creating plot files from AutoCAD:

Setting up the Plot Driver

We use high-speed KIP & Oce printers. These printers will print HP plot (plt) files correctly.

  1. From AutoCAD: Command prompt at the bottom of the screen type in CONFIG and hit enter.
  2. This will bring up the OPTIONS window. Under the PLOTTING tab select “Add a Plotter”.
  3. Select”Add a Plotter” wizard, select next and choose “My Computer”.
  4. Select HP DesignJet 650C.
  5. You can import plotter specific information at this step or proceed to the next screen.
  6. Choose “Plot to File”.
  7. Name the printer “Del Mar Blue”
  8. After answering these questions you will return to the OPTIONS window where you will see that the “Del Mar Blue” print driver has been added to the list of available plotters. Click on OK and return to your AutoCAD screen.

How to Create the Plot File

At the COMMAND prompt type plot (or go to File, Print or click on the printer icon). This brings up the PRINT PLOT CONFIGURATION window.

  1. Under the PLOT tab choose the “Del Mar Blue” you have just created.
  2. Choose how you will be plotting (i.e. DISPLAY, EXTENTS, WINDOWS, etc.). Click on File Name and pick the destination for your plot file.
  3. Under PAPER SIZE and ORIENTATION click on the SIZE button and select the paper size. If you do not see a size that works for you, you can create a custom paper size in the PROPERTIES area (i.e. 24 x 36). Try to select the expand sheet size.
  4. Under the PLOT SETTINGS TAB choose your PLOT STYLE TABLE, SCALE, ROTATION, and ORIGIN etc.
  5. Lastly, we recommend that you do a full preview. This will show you just how your drawing will look in the paper size you have selected. Click on the OK button and your plot file is created.

You can also print to a PDF:

This is more common file format because it can be printed & viewed easily
PDF995 is a great pdf driver which can be downloaded here.
